Can Qwen 3.8 Max Beat Fable 5?
From the member
atwellpubQwen 3.8 Max reached general availability on August 3, 2026, and it is the first challenger this year aimed squarely at Fable 5 rather than at the tier below it. This comparison is worth the time because it works from real side-by-side outputs people posted on X, across artwork, Three.js scenes and photorealistic rendering, rather than from vendor benchmark charts.
The argument most teams will actually have is about price, so here are the list rates as of August 7, 2026.
Qwen 3.8 Max: $2.00 per million input tokens, $6.00 per million output, $0.25 per million cached input, flat across the full one million token context with no length tiering.
Claude Fable 5: $10.00 per million input tokens, $50.00 per million output, $1.00 per million on cache hits and refreshes, $12.50 per million on five minute cache writes.
That is five times on input and a little over eight times on output at list. Two things are worth knowing before anyone draws a conclusion from those multiples. Fable 5 has a batch tier at $5.00 input and $25.00 output, which halves the list gap to roughly 2.5x and 4.2x for work that tolerates a queue. And prompt caching narrows it further on any workload that re-reads the same context, which is most agent work.
None of that settles the question the video is really asking. The cheaper token is not automatically the cheaper job. A model that needs two attempts at a fifth of the price has saved nothing, and a model that gets there first at eight times the rate can still be the better buy on a task where your own time is the expensive input. Worth measuring on your own workload rather than inheriting anyone else’s verdict.
